Buta the sword for hire is recruited by the Tufugu Pirates on their voyage to seek a stockpile of treasure. On board he discovers the child Kitsune locked away below deck. After some misunderstandings and with the promise of more money, the two of them go on their own adventure.

Note: Buta is one of the four anime works that each received 38 million yen (about US$470,000) from the "2011 Young Animator Training Project." Just like in 2010, the animation labor group received 214.5 million yen (US$2.65 million) from the Japanese government's Agency for Cultural Affairs, and it distributed most of those funds to studios who train young animators on-the-job.

Renewal pulse
Courcast score breakdown
CourScore weighs signals for an official sequel announcement within 18 months, blending attention velocity, completion strength, and catalogue health.
CourScore
16.5
CourScore measures renewal signals out of 100. It is not a calibrated probability of an official sequel announcement within 18 months.
Signal coverage: 100% • Signal freshness: High • Updated 8 hours ago
Top reasons
- Committee renewal track record - Lead committee members (Telecom Animation Film) have a smoothed catalogue continuation rate of 33%, above the catalogue average of 14%
- Reddit discussion momentum - 7 weekly Reddit threads, compared with current activity
- Titles like this rarely return - 14 years with no new entry: of films (first entries) in that position, under 1% got a new season or film within 10 years
Runway
Anime original
This is an anime original, not an adaptation, so there is no source material to run down - renewal turns on sales and popularity rather than runway.
